El cáncer es un conjunto de enfermedades en las cuales el organismo produce un exceso de células malignas con rasgos típicos de comportamiento y crecimiento descontrolado (crecimiento y división más allá de los límites normales, invasión de tejido circundante y, a veces, metástasis). La metástasis, característica de muchos tipos de cáncer, es la propagación distante por vía fundamentalmente linfática o sanguínea, de las células originarias del cáncer y el crecimiento de nuevos tumores en los lugares de destino de dicha metástasis. Estas tres propiedades (división celular incontrolada, comportamiento aberrante y metástasis) diferencian a los tumores malignos (carcinomas) de los benignos (a veces simplemente llamados tumores), los cuales son limitados y no invaden o producen metástasis. La mayoría de cánceres forman tumores, pero algunos como la leucemia no lo hacen.
